This review is from: At World's Edge (Audio CD)
The versatile French-born pianist/keyboardist releases a typically stylish and largely instrumental album.
Philippe's CV speaks for itself: it boasts sideman credits with the likes of luminaries such as of Gary Burton, David Bowie, Al Di Meola, Al Jarreau, Paul King, David Sanborn and others.
Since the 90s he's become something of a smooth jazz/New Age icon himself with a series of albums as leader that have picked great attention and success.
"At the world's Edge" is his 8th offering.
Smooth grooves like the jaunty "From Nowhere To Now Here" and the highly melodic "The Rover" showcase his talents perfectly. "Roppongi Blues" adds a jazzier flavour. 'Billy's Blues' has a Larry Carlton type feel. It is the more straightforward Smooth Jazz such as 'Topanga Moon Dance' that suits his playing.
The track "Assante Sana" benefits from the Beninese vocalist Angélique Kidjo's stunningly unique vocals and is a highlight on a versatile set that combines African, funk, blues, rock and jazz.
The basic group includes Simon Phillips on drums, Pino Palladino on bass, and Jeff Golub on guitar: the album is a "real treat" and Philippe is helped by his choice of some of the hottest contemporary jazz musicians.
The supporting cast includes appearances from Angélique Kidjo, Lanny Castro, Jeff Beal, Kirk Whalum, Michael Davis, David Rice, Kirk Whalum, Rick Braun, Marc Antoine : altogether they ensure this recording packs a killer punch.
A must "listen to" CD.
